Courts of the Living: Re-imagining environmental justice in the era of ecological crisis

Environmental degradation has emerged as one of the most pressing governance challenges confronting Ghana and many developing countries today. Illegal mining activities, deforestation, wetland destruction, biodiversity loss, and pollution of major river systems continue to threaten ecological sustainability, public health, and long-term economic resilience.
While environmental laws and regulatory institutions exist, enforcement outcomes remain inadequate. A significant reason for this challenge lies in the continued dominance of human-centred legal reasoning, where environmental harm is often addressed only when direct human or economic impacts become visible.
Against this background, the emerging global concept of COURTS OF THE LIVING offers an important intellectual and policy reflection for the future of environmental governance.

Africa: African journalists call for stronger press Freedom protection on Africa Day

The Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) has today joined millions of Africans in celebrating Africa Day and has called for a renewed Pan-African push for solidarity, stronger protection for journalists and greater African ownership of the continent’s narrative.
In commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa, which is designated as Africa Day, the continental journalists’ body said Africa’s future must remain firmly in African hands and warned that the march for democracy and development cannot flourish where journalists are silenced and tormented.
The Pan-African Federation said Africa Day represents more than a symbolic anniversary, describing it as “a celebration of our progress, our identity and our shared determination to build the Africa we want”, with what FAJ described as “conviction” and a belief that Africa’s liberation and future had to be shaped collectively by Africans themselves, including journalists in the continent.
